SULAIMANI – Fourteen Islamic State (ISIS) members were arrested by the Kurdish security forces in an operation in eastern Deir Ezzor, said the pro-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Wednesday (May 12).

“Another operation has successfully been undertaken by the Asayish (Internal Security Forces) resulting in the detention of 14 ISIS cell members, in alshahel [e]ast of Deir Ezzor,” the SDF tweeted. “Weapons &equipment were confiscated.”

The US-led Coalition also provided air surveillance backup, added the SDF.

The Asayish operation followed another one by SDF launched on Monday in coordination with the US-led Coalition to clamp down on ISIS sleeper cells in Wadi al-Ajeej area in Deir Ezzor countryside.

“Our SDF partners continue to take the fight to Daesh,” Wayne Marotto, the spokesperson for the US-led Coalition, tweeted on Wednesday. “The Wadi al-Ajeej operation has destroyed trenches, tunnels & smuggling routes. There’s no safe place for Daesh in NE Syria.”

On Monday, an SDF member was killed and several were wounded on Deir Ezzor outskirts in attack by ISIS militants in Deir Ezzor, Rojava Information Center (RIP) reported.

RIC said it had recorded an increase in sleeper cell attacks in the area.

On Sunday, the US-Based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that suspected ISIS militants carried out an attack on a bus carrying a SDF force in al-Kabar village west of Deir Ezzor, killing four SDF members and injuring some others.

On Monday, unknown gunman shot dead an SDF leader east of Deir Ezzor, reported North Press Agency (NPA).

The SOHR recorded 260 assassinations including seventeen children and eleven women were by armed cells in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, al-Hasakah countryside, al-Raqqah city and countryside, and Manbij area. In addition, 478 SDF fighters, including local leaders, were assassinated in the same areas.

The watchdog has also logged four casualties within the Coalition troops in the areas.

ISIS seized swathes of territories in Iraq and Syria in 2014. The militant group was declared defeated in Iraq in 2017 and 2019 in Syria respectively.

The militant group still pose a threat to stability and security through its sleeper cells carrying out hit-and-run attacks, kidnappings and bombings in both countries.

The SDF and other Kurdish security forces regularly launch anti-ISIS operations in areas under its jurisdiction, especially in Deir Ezzor border areas. Deir Ezzor is partly run by the Syria regime.
