SULAIMANI – Sulaimani authorities take precautions and safety tips to prevent wildfires that could take place this upcoming summer on Goizha mountain after the fires that affected the areas.

Overnight stays at Goizha and Azmar mountains will be banned for tourists and visitors, Sulaimani municipality said in a statement after a meeting with the security and public service administrations.

Lightening fires are prevented and firebreaks will be established in preparation for the fire season that is expected to start in June.

A firebreak creates a barrier to slow down or stop the progress of wildfires onto farms, residential areas or any other key points.

“Goizha mountain won’t go green due to fire that continue to take place annually as a reason of irresponsibility,” the head of Sulaimani forest directorate Dr. Abdulla Ahmed said.

According to the Suliamani municipality, recently 100,000 trees have been planted and green has been brought back to 800 dunams (197.684 acres) of land in Goizha and Azmar mountains.

Nearly 300 dunams of forest was destroyed in a fire which took place on September 3 and burned through the forests of Mount Goizha.

Two visitors confessed to starting the major fire. Mount Goizha overlooks Sulaimani and is a vantage point for the sights of the city, making it a popular spot for picnics.
