SULAIMANI – Iraq’s Council of Representatives’ lawmaker Ghalib Muhammad said on Friday (February 26) that he was attacked by an unidentified suspect in front of his house in Sulaimani’s Slemani Nwe neighborhood.

Ghailb, who is from the Change Movement (Gorran) bloc in the federal legislature, was stabbed eight times in the head and lips earlier in the evening, according to information Zhyan obtained.

“It is normal to me if I sacrifice my life for it [defending people], thus we will continue either as a lawmaker, in [Change Movement] bloc , or in Hiwa Coalition,” he said at a press conference with his head wrapped in bandage.

Hiwa Coalition is a recently formed Kurdish grouping consisted of fifteen lawmakers outside the ruling Kurdish political and opposition parties.

“I have been under threats for a long period because we defend the people’s rights and demands. Friends and enemies should know we will carry on.”

The lawmaker called on the security forces to probe into the incident and arrest anyone responsible.

Gorran spokesperson Dler Abdulrazaq described the incident as a “cowardly act”

“We see the incident as a reaction against Change Movement and the narrowing of the freedoms,” Abdulrazaq said according to his party's affiliated media KNN.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani condemned the stabbing in a tweet, saying the security agencies were directed to make a precise probe and hold the attackers to account.

“I spoke with Kak [Mr.] Ghalib in a phone call and assured him that these cowardly acts will not be accepted from anyone,”Talabani stated.

KRG also condemned the incident in a statement, saying that “the Kurdistan Regional Government spare no efforts to protect people regardless of any status and posts.”
